Flowers and love have been entwined for centuries, carrying messages that words sometimes could not. In Victorian society, where feelings were not always easily or appropriately spoken aloud, flowers developed a language all of their own.

A carefully composed posy could express affection, devotion, hope or longing, with each flower chosen for its particular meaning. Even the way a flower was presented could add another layer to the message. A bouquet might say what propriety prevented a handwritten note from revealing – a beautiful, discreet exchange understood by those who knew how to read it.
